Norse festival

Midsummer (Miðsumar)

Around the summer solstice; in Scandinavian folk custom usually Midsummer Eve, 23 June

About

Direct evidence for a pagan Norse midsummer sacrifice is thin, and Snorri's list of great sacrifices does not include one. Midsummer has nonetheless been one of the great festivals of Scandinavia for centuries, later tied to St John's Eve, with bonfires in Norway and Denmark and the decorated midsummer pole in Sweden. Modern heathens often honour the sun and the gods of growth at this time.

Customs

  • Raising and dancing around a leafy midsummer pole, as in Sweden
  • Lighting bonfires on Midsummer Eve, as in Norway and Denmark
  • Wearing crowns of wild flowers
  • Placing seven kinds of flowers under the pillow to dream of the future, a Swedish folk custom
  • Feasting outdoors late into the light night

Food

  • Pickled herring
  • New potatoes with dill
  • Strawberries and cream
  • Flatbread and butter

A simple ritual

  1. Weave a small crown or wreath of summer flowers and greenery.
  2. Go outside and greet the sun, thanking Sol for her long journey across the sky.
  3. Light a candle or small fire safely and remember Baldr, the bright one.
  4. Share food outdoors with friends or family.
  5. Before sleeping, place a few wild flowers under your pillow and notice your dreams.

Never leave candles or fires unattended, and keep them away from pets and children.
